WHAT IS ELDER ABUSE AND WHO IS AFFECTED?
Elder Abuse is a single, or repeated act, or lack of appropriate action, occurring within any relationship where there is an expectation of trust, which causes harm or distress to an older person. This definition has been adopted by the World Health Organization (WHO) from a definition put forward by Action on Elder Abuse in the UK.
Did you know that just four out of every 100 cases of elder abuse are reported?
Approximately 4,000 cases of Elder Abuse and Dependent Adult Abuse were reported in Contra Costa last year. That's double the reported cases of child abuse in this county.Which means that only 1 abuse victim in 25 receives help and supports to regain personal safety, care, and justice. When victims of abuse do not get help and services, we all bear the cost and burden, resulting in an over reliance on emergency services, longer hospital stays, Medicaid reliance, and strains on public benefits and resources.
Financial abuse is the most prevalent and most under reported form of abuse (only 1 in 44 cases are reported).
Elder and dependent adult abuse affects individuals across all socio-economic groups, cultures, and races. As our county shifts its demographics from youth to maturity, we need to understand abuse in the context of aging- the risks, the costs, and supports. June is Elder and Dependent Adult Abuse Awareness month; awareness should lead to action. Let’s build system capacity in Contra Costa County to recognize, report, and respond to elder and dependent adult abuse and neglect.
